ROME (AP)—Rafael Nadal opened his bid for a fifth Rome Masters title with a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Wednesday.

After withdrawing from last week’s Barcelona Open, Nadal appeared fresh and dictated play with his usual combination of heavy topspin, few unforced errors and baseline winners. The third-ranked Spaniard improved to 6-0 in his career against his 29th-ranked German opponent.

“It wasn’t my best match, but I did well,” Nadal said. “I played safe and I played focused all the time. Philipp made more mistakes than usual.”

Nadal has won the clay-court tournament four of the past five years and is the favorite again after top-ranked Roger Federer was stunned by Ernests Gulbis on Tuesday.

Federer got some consolation Wednesday when he teamed in doubles with fellow Swiss player Yves Allegro to beat sixth-seeded Simon Aspelin of Sweden and Paul Hanley of Australia 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 after a champions tiebreaker.

In other matches, American John Isner lost to Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 (7), 7-5, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga cruised past Viktor Troicki 6-2, 6-3 and Ivan Ljubicic eliminated Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 7-6 (3).

Nadal only faced one break point in his match—at 2-3 in the second set— and saved it when Kohlschreiber missed an easy backhand wide. Nadal broke in the next game, producing a high passing shot that Kohlschreiber could barely get his racket on, and cruised the rest of the way.

The new 10,500-seat stadium at the Foro Italico was nearly full for the match, but Nadal gave the spectators only 1 hour, 10 minutes of play. He led 18-15 in winners and committed only 11 unforced errors to Kohlschreiber’s 28.

Nadal’s dominance was similar to when he won the Monte Carlo Masters two weeks ago, dropping only 14 games in five matches and routing Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-1 in the final.

With Nadal absent, Verdasco won his fifth career title in Barcelona last week. He edged Simone Bolelli 7-6 (11), 6-3 to open his campaign in Rome.

Also, Stanislas Wawrinka eliminated Tomas Berdych 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6), and 42nd-ranked Guillermo Garcia-Lopez beat former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 6-3. Filippo Volandri stopped Julien Bennetau 6-2, 6-0, while Santiago Giraldo beat Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Robin Soderling extended his solid form with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Paolo Lorenzi.

Soderling was coming off a runner-up finish at the Barcelona Open, where he lost to Fernando Verdasco in three sets. In the Swede’s previous two tournaments — Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Key Biscayne—he reached the semifinals.

Soderling ended Nadal’s perfect record at the French Open last year and is in the same quarter of the draw as the Spaniard.

A six-time major champion and arguably the greatest clay court player of all time, Nadal won four straight French Open titles from 2005 to 2008. He compiled a 31-0 record at Roland Garros until his stunning loss to Robin Soderling in the round of 16 in 2009. From April 2005 through May 2007, Nadal won 81 consecutive matches on clay, a single-surface winning streak that stands as an Open Era record. Nadal defeated his rival Roger Federer in 2008 Wimbledon final, considered one of the greatest matches of all time, and in doing so became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. Nadal also defeated Federer to win the 2009 Australian Open final; it was the seventh time the two met in a Grand Slam final (Nadal leads 5-2). A knee injury prevented him from defending his Wimbledon title in 2009. Nadal is the 2008 Olympic champion in men’s singles. After spending a record 160 weeks ranked No. 2 behind Roger Federer, Nadal ascended to the No. 1 spot on August 18, 2008. He ceded the No. 1 ranking to Federer on July 6, 2009. Nadal is the first left-handed man to finish the year with the No. 1 ranking since John McEnroe in 1984, and the first Spaniard ever to achieve that feat. A native of the island of Mallorca, he is coached by his uncle, Toni Nadal. (as of October 15, 2009)

Do you want to be a successful blogger?

I do. I might be getting a bit obsessed with it, actually.

Post ideas pop into my head unexpectedly. I keep a long running list of ideas for improving my blog.

I also study how the most successful bloggers got where they are, and I pore over every word that they write.

If you want to be a great blogger, you should, too.

A lot of the top bloggers like Brian Clark, Darren Rowse, and Leo
Babauta have shared hundreds of tips about how they made their blogs so successful. But each blogger’s tips are just a little different.
There’s too much advice to follow

So I would read one special report with a great idea and put that into place on my blog. But the next day I’d find a podcast from another top blogger with contradictory advice, so I’d change my blog again. Then I’d come across a third idea from an equally successful blogger, which sent me down a totally new path.

Finally I realized I needed to stop focusing on little things like what plug-ins to use, how to write my About Page, or where to position my ads.

I needed to focus on a bigger picture. I wanted to find out what all these top bloggers had in common. Their mindset, their mental habits.

I spent a lot of time observing, which led to this list of the eight success traits shared by all top bloggers I’ve found. I’m happy to share it with you.

The good news is that even if you don’t have all these personality traits already, most of them can be developed over time. Best of all, if you can cultivate these traits, you’ll become more effective in the rest of your life as well.
1. Effective bloggers are prolific

The first key to being a successful blogger is to write. A lot.

The more you write, the better your writing gets. The more posts you add to your blog, the more juice you’ll get from search engines. And more content means more reader visits to see what’s new.

There’s no way around it; it takes work to be prolific. Effective bloggers work hard. Putting a successful blog together requires a lot of time in front of your computer, and not surfing LOLCats or Twittering about what you had for lunch. Great bloggers put serious time into researching, writing, editing, and planning posts for their blogs.
2. Effective bloggers are concise

It is a truth universally acknowledged by top bloggers; people come to your blog for a reason. Usually because they want to learn something from you.

No one wants to read fluff or blather, especially online.

Top bloggers know how to quickly get people’s attention, how to keep it, and how to make their posts easy to digest.

Most effective bloggers tend toward short posts. They also divide their copy into short paragraphs, and use bullet points or numbered lists to keep the reader scanning. They use compelling subheads so readers can scan for the information they need.

Brevity comes in handy in other areas of life, too. Keep your phone calls short. Pare your email messages down to the essentials. You’ll have more time for creative work, and people will be much more interested in what you have to say.
3. Effective bloggers are analytical

Successful bloggers don’t work or live in a bubble.

They always look to their readers, observing carefully to see what readers care about and respond to.

They study their statistics, so they know where readers come from — what sites, what search engines, what search terms, and even what countries.

They know when they tend to get the most traffic, what kinds of posts are best suited for their audience, and what kinds of headlines get tweeted most often.

Then they tailor the timing, content, layout, and images of their posts to suit their audience.
4. Effective bloggers are lifelong learners

If you’re new to blogging, you’re probably on a steep learning curve at the moment.

Maybe you tell yourself that things will get better when you’ve been doing it longer. There won’t be so much to learn. You’ll have systems in place soon and everything will run smoothly.

Sadly, I think this is a myth. I’ve been using and designing for the Internet for about 15 years, and it keeps changing. Just when you’ve got one element sorted out, something new gets released. Or becomes obsolete. Or mutates in 20 different directions.

If you want to stay ahead in blogging, you have to keep learning.

Fortunately, being curious and wanting to learn keeps you young and your brain active. A love of learning doesn’t just set you up for a successful blog, but for a successful and happy life.
5. Effective bloggers are focused and consistent

Successful bloggers choose a topic and stick to it.

They write consistently about their chosen subject, and with a consistent voice and approach. Even when they write about something that seems to be off-topic, they relate it back to the niche they know their readers are interested in.

Top bloggers are also consistent about timing. Most stick to regular posting schedules. Whether they post three posts a day or two posts a week, their readers know what to expect.
6. Effective bloggers plan ahead

Successful bloggers know where they’re going. They have a master plan and they stick to it. Yes, they adapt based on feedback, but always in service of a vision.

To paraphrase Seth Godin’s recent book Linchpin, “Effective bloggers ship.” Top bloggers don’t waffle for months about the typeface on their upcoming ebook. They may tailor the angle, price, or format to better suit their market. But they don’t let themselves get derailed. They follow the plan.
7. Effective bloggers are persistent

Top bloggers understand that success doesn’t happen overnight. Real success rarely happens quickly.

Time is on your side. To get to the top takes consistency, hard work, serious study, and lots of persistence. Successful bloggers don’t give up.
8. Effective bloggers are self-starters

I’ve been self-employed for years.

I’ve noticed a lot of people like the idea of working from home, working for themselves, being their own boss. But if you want these things, you need to be able to manage yourself.

No one is going to sack you if you’re late. No one reminds you of important deadlines or nags you to get your sales numbers up.

If you want to be a successful blogger, you need to be a self-starter. It’s not enough to have good ideas. You have to act on them.
What trait do you think is most valuable?

What do you think the most important trait of a top blogger is? It might be one of these eight, or something completely different. Let us know in the comments!

Amazonian Marketing

Amazonian Marketing

In Greek and Roman legends, Amazons were women known to be fierce warriors. I can think of a few of us Moms who can seriously relate to the concept. We are Warrior Moms, battling against sometimes impossible odds to raise well-adjusted children, keep our families intact, keep the bills paid, keep the house clean, and hopefully squeeze in a little time for writing. (Notice sleep and relaxation are not in that list – those are luxuries for most of us Warrior Moms.)

The image of mythological warriors and their modern-day counterparts is not exactly what I’m talking about in terms of Amazonian Marketing.

Although, there is an appeal to thinking of myself as something of an Amazon in terms of writing and getting published. Perhaps it’s the image of strength and courage normally associated with Amazons. Or maybe it’s the idea of being fierce in pursuing my publishing goals. Whatever it is, it works for me. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about today.

No, today I wanted to talk about a more modern Amazon – as in Amazon.com. I can remember when Amazon first burst onto the scene & only sold books. Now, you can find just about anything on Amazon.com, but they’re still best known for books. Thousands upon thousands of people go to Amazon.com every single day looking for books to buy, books to download, or just general information on books.

Amazon for Author Marketing

I attended a webinar not to long ago & one of the presenters brought up Amazon. When asked what was the one thing he would recommend every author do to improve their chances of a successful book – his response was that Amazon is a writer’s best friend in terms of marketing. Even before you publish your book, he recommended building a profile on Amazon. In his words, even just reviewing other books and participating in the various communities on Amazon was better than no presence on Amazon at all.

I decided to check out his advice and take a different look at Amazon. For once, rather than just looking for books I wanted to read, I went through the site looking from a writer’s viewpoint. Amazon has an entire section called Author Central where you can build an author profile, upload book cover images, and even create an author blog. Hmm. Interesting. I could see that being advantageous once I’m finished with my book & ready to publish.
Ebooks on Amazon

But that’s not the only cookie jar Amazon has their hands in these days. We’ve all heard of the Kindle – that nifty ebook reader taking the book-reading world by storm. Some folks hate them, others swear by them.

As someone who often drops paperbacks in her purse to have handy reading material, I can appreciate the idea of a Kindle & have one on my wish list. (I buy paperbacks as disposable books – most of the time, by the time I’m done with one, it’s not fit to be read by anyone else. Dog-eared, bent, ripped, it’s rough being a paperback book in my purse.)

Amazon offers hundreds of ebooks for sale now. You don’t have to have a Kindle to download them. I can see how making an ebook, even for royalty published books, could tap into additional sales an author might otherwise miss. I can also see how someone writing a nonfiction book as a marketing tool could use Amazon’s ebook section to really boost their sales.
Self Publishing Through Amazon

And if author pages/blogs and ebook options weren’t enough? Amazon now has their own self-publishing venue, CreateSpace. I’ve heard good and not-so-good things about CreateSpace. Since I’ve never used it, I couldn’t honestly give an opinion. However, it’s yet another option to pursue for writers looking to self publish.

According to the info on Amazon, it’s free. They offer cover design software and other tools, although the professional in me wonders just how good that stuff is going to look on the finished product. I’d love to see in person what an actual book published by Amazon looks like.

I naturally hesitate when I see free tools for things like cover design. It’s been my experience that when it comes to anything graphic design, free tools are usually sub-par. And when a company advertises how easy something like that is, it’s been my experience that it almost always results in a sub-standard finished product. But I could be wrong.

My own personal misgivings on some of the options Amazon offers aside, you can’t argue with the fact that Amazon plays a big role in the publishing industry. You’d have to be a fool not to take advantage of anything and everything they offer in terms of author pages & profile options. And with the ever-expanding popularity of ebooks, it’s important to keep an eye on those options for increased distribution & buyers as well. Read More..
